Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system, a sister circulatory system to the cardiovascular, plays a crucial role in our body’s ability to ward off disease, heal from injury, and detoxify. It also supports all the other systems of the body. Without the proper movement of this lymphatic fluid, we would swell up and our cells would be swamped with toxic and stagnant fluid.

Lymphatic Drainage increases circulation of the body fluids, stimulates the immune system, promotes a state of relaxation and balance of the autonomic nervous system which may result in:

  • Detoxification of the body
  • Regeneration of tissues (burns, surgical scarring from cosmetic surgeries)
  • Reduction in edemas (swelling) and lymphedemas of various origins
  • Relief from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
  • Improve Immune system (Lyme’s Disease)
  • Relief from chronic pain

The lymphatic system regulates fluid volume, maintains the body’s fluid balance, and removes the cells’ excreted waste products. It also plays an integral role in the immune functions of the body: the lymph nodes filter and purify the lymph (the fluid that circulates inside the lymphatic vessels); lymphocytes and other killer cells destroy bacteria and foreign, harmful substances; it creates antibodies; and it provokes an immune response.

Lymphatic Drainage is widespread in Europe and South America where it is regularly used by surgeons before and after operations, especially for cosmetic procedures, such as liposuctions and face-lifts. Studies have proven that it can hasten healing by up to 50% post-surgery and promote healthy scar formation. Enhanced lymph flow can assist significantly in post-surgical healing.

Swelling (edemas) of various origins, i.e. rheumatoid conditions and sports injuries can be reduced with the application of Lymphatic Drainage Lymphedemas resulting from injury to the lymphatic vessels from surgery or from lymphadectomies resulting from breast or prostate cancer surgeries may be managed or even prevented.

In a Lymph Drainage session, the therapist detects the rhythm, direction, depth, and quality of the flow and then, using very gentle pressure with soft wavelike movements on the skin, encourages and enhances the lymph to flow in the direction of the lymph nodes.
